HISS is a new effort and first solo project from Philadelphia's Ethan Tripp, a keen cultivator of analog microsound and an award-winning brewmaster. Listening to END BEGINNING (MFCD M), there is a biographical essence as narratives slowly build, collide with one another, and fade into space, yielding barren plateaus upon which new ones are built.

The music is rife with episodic sequences situated within realms carved from the thinking of Eliane Radigue and Pierre Schaeffer, owing far less to Sunn O))) than to the more painstakingly composed, slowly cooked tapestries from Niblock and Radigue. HISS employs shards of color throughout, at no set pace or periodicity, defying claims of limitations within the analogue. The artist eschews computers in lieu of carefully placed microphones, and unknown agitational devices, yielding tonal wormholes to give us a piece vaguely dystopian enough to play in the tradition of longform creative writing. With its own performance techniques at play and put to new trial, relying only upon what the hands and the ears can accomplish as the sound goes to tape, HISS scuttles the technological tendencies and trivialities of today's 'dark ambient music' and gives us something richer, embracing histories in music as much as aerating and seeding new parcels.
