Marginal Frequency is proud to present ‘Of Another’, a series of acoustic guitar duos presented and assembled by Melbourne’s Alexander Garsden. Remarkably, this is Garsden’s first release under his own name. The guitarist and multi-instrumentalist is a true force and is highly respected as a composer, sound artist, and curator of avant and experimentally-minded music throughout the state of Victoria and well beyond.

Of Another (Duos 2018-2019) will stun for active, immersive listening. The guitars in each duo respectfully separated in the stereo image, converging and morphing into aural braids over time. Each piece is improvised, developed from the sparsest of sketches, the two constants in each being tempo and shared interests in the exploration of broader tonalities.

Alexander Garsden is a composer, guitarist and electroacoustic musician, working across multiple exploratory musical disciplines. He is based in Melbourne, Australia.

Recent work include commissions from the Melbourne and Sydney Symphony Orchestras, Speak Percussion, Michael Kieran Harvey, and Eugene Ughetti, alongside performances with Tetuzi Akiyama (Japan), Oren Ambarchi, Radu Malfatti (Austria), Julia Reidy, David Stackenäs (Sweden), and with Erkki Veltheim and Rohan Drape.

From 2014 to 2019 Alexander was co-director of the INLAND Concert Series. He has taught through the RMIT and the University of Melbourne.

Julia Reidy (b. 1993) draws upon instability and endurance, often through an extended palette of raw acoustic sounds, synthesised material and recorded artefacts. Julia has performed as a soloist, and within various collaborative projects, at festivals such as Tectonics Glasgow, Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, Mona Foma, Send + Receive, Berlin Jazz Festival and many more - and has released solo music on Slip, Feeding Tube, Room40 and Black Truffle.

Beautifully eerie 12-string guitar, synth and autotune studies played with a rare, tempered intensity and grace. It’s a highly unusual disruption of classic Takoma/fingerstyle with electronic drone and found sounds, at different points reminding us of everything from Hope Sandoval to late period Talk Talk, Jim O’Rourke, Tashi Wada Group and of course John Fahey, while ultimately sounding like none of them. - Boomkat 2019.

David Stackenäs was born in 1974 in Stockholm, Sweden. After finishing his studies at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm he has grown to become one of the mainstays of improvised and creative music in Sweden.

Stackenäs works in the field of contemporary jazz and free improvised music. Over the years he has developed a unique way of playing guitar – both prepared with different materials as well as conventional technique and a growing armada of pedals. With a wide range of sounds and techniques he creates music with great imagination and poetry. As a soloist he mainly focuses on acoustic guitars, using a lot of the organic sound- possibilities and timbres the instrument has to offer.

Through the years he has played with, among many others: Evan Parker, Barry Guy, Lina Nyberg, Sofia Jernberg, Rhodri Davies, Paul Lovens, Axel Dörner, Sten Sandell, Thurston Moore, Mazen Kerbaj, Christine Abdelnour, Ken Vandermark, Paal Nilssen-Love, Cecilia Persson, Jim O'Rourke, Tatsuya Nakatani.

Guitarist, violinist, and multi-instrumentalist Tetuzi Akiyama is well known in underground music currents and has been a catalyst in their development for the last 30+ years.

From 1998-2003, together with guitarist Taku Sugimoto and Toshimaru Nakamura (no-input mixing board), he organized an inspiring monthly concert series, The Improvisation Meeting at Bar Aoyama (renamed The Experimental Meeting in ’99, and Meeting at Off Site in 2000). His first solo release, ‘Relator’, was released on Sugimoto’s Slub Music imprint in 2001. In the twenty years since, Akiyama has continued to “specialize in creating music with elements of both primitivism and realism by connecting his own aspirations, in a minimal and straightforward way, to the special instrumental qualities of the guitar.” His acoustic guitar work is regarded to be among the most forward thinking of its kind, while permeated by a nostalgia for past forms.
